Fall Celebrations

Though fall in Umeå is a bit more condensed than I’m used to – it seems as if the trees changed colors AND lost their leaves in a matter of weeks – we’ve managed to fit in some great fall celebrations.

At the end of September we had a BBQ at one of the fire pits on Lake Nydalasjön to celebrate the Chinese Mid-Autumn, or Moon, Festival. My Canadian classmate Desmond’s mom is from Hong Kong and mailed him six moon cakes to eat! Though the day began rainy, it turned out to be quite a nice night… even the moon made an appearance.

Desmond also organized a wonderful belated Canadian Thanksgiving this past weekend. About 15 of of us from different classes at UID (and my Danish hallmate Tine) enjoyed the potluck, using the Design School kitchen to prepare a majority of the dishes and the school atrium to eat. The feast was definitely a good practice for me as I am in charge of spearheading American Thanksgiving… and not to mention I was a bit lost without Ben in the kitchen (whew – I’ve become spoiled). I made an ‘interesting’ ad hoc lingonberry jello and redeemed myself with a wonderful sweet potato casserole.

And saving the best for last, Ben and I celebrated our 5 year anniversary on October 9th! You can also read about our dinner at Teatercafet.
